Essential oils are a soothing and beautiful support tool for our body, mind, and spirit. There are many applications and uses and an amazing variety of different essential oils. They are the plant-based medicine that can help us shift our mental, emotional and physical state into a better balance.

Here are my top oils suggestions for reintegrating after experiencing loss. Descriptions adapted from one of my very favorite reference books: “Emotions & Essential Oils: A Reference Guide for Emotional Healing”.

Geranium – The Oil of Love & Trust

Geranium helps us to ‘get safe’ and feel protected while healing the broken heart. It encourages emotional honesty by facilitating the emergence of grief or pain that has been suppressed. It is a heart-opener that assists in emotional healing and nurtures our inner child and supports us in re-parenting our child. When we have a difficult time accessing emotions so that we can process them through us, Geranium is a welcome support that helps us quiet the noisy mind and lead us into the warmth of the heart.

At its root, Geranium heals the heart, instills unconditional love and fosters trust.

Use topically over the heart or on the soles of the feet. Diffuse in combination with Ylang Ylang and Rose.

Ylang Ylang – The Oil of the Inner Child

Ylang Ylang is a powerful remedy for the heart. It helps us release emotional trauma so that we may process anger and sadness up and out of the body. After Ylang Ylang helps us process buried emotion, it leads us back to play and childlike innocence. It assists in accessing intuition and “heart knowing” as we did when we were children. This oil allows emotional healing to flow naturally, nurturing the heart through this process. It reminds us that joy can be felt and experienced more fully when we allow the heart its full range of emotions.

Use topically over the heart or on the soles of the feet. Diffuse in combination with Rose, Tangerine or Wild Orange.

Lime – The Oil of Zest for Life

When we have been weighed down by discouragement or grief, Lime elevates us above the mire. It instills courage and cheer in the heart and brings us back to gratitude. Lime cleanses the heart of the accumulation of emotional toxins due to avoidance or repression. It revitalizes the heart space giving room for light and joy. Lime clears emotional congestion from the heart and supports us in regaining the balance between the heart and mind. It dispels apathy and resignation and instills hope, joy, courage and the determination to face all of life’s challenges.

Use topically over the heart, at temples, pulse points and soles of feet. Diffuse with Tangerine, Melissa, and Peppermint.

My two favorite blends for grief and loss are dōTERRA’s “Console” and “Hope”.

These are truly extraordinary oil blends and their names say it all. They were specifically formulated for Consoling and bringing Hope to the hopeless.  Incredibly effective at helping us shift when we feel stuck. Each is a unique blend that incorporates some of the oils listed above as well as Frankincense, Sandalwood, and others.
